Newton’s Model
"The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God'" (Ps. 14:1).
Some time ago I read something of interest about Sir Isaac Newton (a world-renowned scientist and philosopher who lived from 1642 to 1747). Newton (who was perhaps best known for his universal gravitation theory and his discovering of the three laws of motion) once had an exact replica of our solar system made in miniature. At its center was a large golden ball representing the sun and revolving around it were small spheres attached at the ends of rods of varying lengths representing Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and other planets. These were all geared together by cogs and belts to make them move around the "sun" in perfect harmony.
According to the account, one day a friend who did not believe in the Biblical account of creation stopped by to visit Newton. Marveling at the device the man exclaimed, "What an exquisite thing! Who made it for you?" Newton replied, "Nobody." "Nobody?" his friend asked. "That's right! I said nobody! All of these balls and cogs and belts and gears just happened to come together and by chance they began revolving in their set orbits with perfect timing." The unbeliever got the message! As it would be foolish to suppose that the model merely happened, it would likewise be foolish to accept the theory that the earth and the vast universe came into being by chance.
Moses, who knew God personally, once said, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Ps. 90:2). Many generations later, David made this observation: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” (Ps. 8:3-4).
The evidence that there was a Creator who created the heavens, the earth, humans, animals, (etc.) is everywhere. In Romans 1:19- 20 the apostle Paul said, “because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”
Friends, only a fool would believe in a theory in which the heavens, the earth, humans, (etc.) all came from some chance accident; and that we, as humans, evolved from some primeval ooze. Sir Isaac Newton evidently understood this. Hopefully his friend finally understood it too. The question is...what do you believe?
